One can take two approaches to sowing wildflower mixtures, depending on the main objectives of the project.

The aesthetic approach is where the main objective is to achieve a visually appealing plant cover at limited cost. Appropriate for this purpose is a standard mixture of low maintenance grass plus a limited number of wildflowers with a wide tolerance of habitats. These standard mixtures are simple for the civil engineer or landscaper to establish with the help of our basic leaflets. Some ecological benefits are achieved by including wildflowers a but they are incidental to the primary objective.

The ready-formulated mixtures listed below will satisfy the aesthetic approach in a wide range of circumstances. They should be sown at 50Kg. per hectare (5g.per square meter) unless otherwise specified. They can be purchased by the kilo, or in 1 hectare packs.

The ecological approach is appropriate where ecological objectives are of greater importance. Whether the objective is to emulate semi-natural chalk grassland or to establish vegetation supportive of a particular community of animals, a specific seed mixture must be tailored to the conditions of the site and the objectives of the project. In this case, Herbiseed’s ecologist can advise on the price and availability of appropriate species and formulate a mixture specifically for the site and the project objectives.

Where assistance is needed in determining suitable mixtures or in supervising soil preparation or planting, Herbiseed can supply technical advice and project management.
