'Park Meadow' grass mixture

origin and composition

'Park Meadow' is a natural mixture of grass and wildflower seeds direct-harvested from an ancient, certified organic, hay meadow in the Thames Valley. It contains 92% wild grasses and 8% wildflower seeds.

This meadow has not been ploughed, re-seeded or ‘improved’ in living memory. Consequently, the grasses are genuinely wild and not modern cultivated varieties. The disadvantage of cultivated grass varieties for use with wildflowers is that cultivated varieties have been bred for rapid growth or vigour, so tend to crowd out the slower growing wildflowers. Consequently, Herbiseed uses the slow-growing ‘Park Meadow’ wild grasses for all our high-quality wildflower seed mixtures.

The soil of Park Meadow is a sandy clay loam with some chalk (pH 7.5) at the foot of the Chilterns. The seed is suitable for sowing on all except strongly acid soil types where an ecologically appropriate, Southeast local-origin or certified organic mixture is desired.
